The Ekka is a lot of fun for everyone, whether taking the family or attending with friends. The annual agricultural show of Queensland, formally known as the Royal Queensland Show, is better known to Brisbane residents simply as “The Ekka” (short for “exhibition”).
EKKA 2022 Edition
Here’s some background information. Bowen Park was the first Royal Queensland Show site in January 1876. It was called The Intercolonial Exhibition. Out of a population of only 20,600 at the time, around 15,000-17,000 people attended the event.
The Association was granted the title “Royal” by His Majesty King George V in 1921 and the inaugural “Royal” Show in 1922. The shorter moniker ‘Ekka’ has replaced ‘Exhibition,’ signifying locals’ fondness for the event. Since then, the event has become the major annual event in Queensland.
On a few times, though, there were a few cancellations. The first was in 1919 when the Spanish Flu outbreak struck. Then in 1942, the lands were used as a World War II staging facility, and the Coronavirus illness (COVID-19) epidemic struck in 2020.
The event cancellation was in the best interests of public health due to the global coronavirus pandemic, social distancing measures, and public gathering restrictions. However, due to the continuing global coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown precautions, there was a cancellation for the second year in 2021.
However, Queensland’s largest annual event is coming back on August 6 to 14, attracting over 400,000 visitors to experience a showcase of Queensland culture, produce, and projects over ten days. There will be competitions, award ceremonies, exhibits, displays, animals, and performances, not to mention rides, show bags, food vendors, entertainment, and nighttime fireworks.
